What the term social justice means to me is a group of individuals who work together as brothers and sisters to rebuild a better community and transform the world. As an individual in Little Village, I grew where I had almost nothing and no one cared for us. It was a harsh childhood. I grew up wanting a safe, clean, new park. Over my lifetime more clubs and organizations have become available for children. One of these positive changes came in the form of a new high school. In 2001, fourteen women and men went on a nineteen day hunger strike to create this school. They gave their time and lives to build a school in which we are standing, sitting, and walking around. These heroes cared about the community and future children who needed an education.
One of the obstacles that we face in the struggle for social justice is a lack of communication. Everybody talks, but nobody stands up. Age, gender, and ethnicity can affect the power one’s voice has in society. Additionally, some people are talkative and open minded while others are quieter. The main struggle against a lack of community has to do with being tolerant. We all think differently, were raised differently, and have different opportunities.
Moreover, self-understanding can help the community achieve social justice. If one understands himself or herself, one won’t care as much about what others say. If a person lets other opinion’s affect them, achieving one’s goals becomes more difficult.
The role of my struggle is to stay motivated. My community still presents many challenges today. My friends, family and I live in a food desert where the most access is to liquor and fast food restaurants. Low income communities seem to be a target for many exploitative practices. Improving my community is my motivation.
