Urban Neighborhoods
“USDA's Economic Research Service estimates that 23.5 million people live in food deserts. More than half of those people (13.5 million) are low-income” (Agricultural Marketing Service - Creating Access to Healthy, Affordable Food (Agricultural Marketing Service - Creating Access to Healthy, Affordable Food). In this case the issue that’s being affected is the community. Not just any community, but people of color and that are consider low income are the ones who are the target to a food dessert. This is not just happening in Chicago but also Los Angeles and New York City. “An estimated 750,000 New York City residents live in food deserts” and “Some of South L.A.’s most arid food deserts, an area where about 97 percent of the population is either Latino, African-American, or of mixed race.”(Food Deserts (Food Empowerment Project).
Limit
Those individuals who are dedicated in eating or drinking because the individual might be allergic to some type of corn flakes and don’t have any more selections. Well those who don’t live on a food dessert seems to have more selections on food/ products. “Those living in food deserts may also find it difficult to locate foods that are culturally appropriate for them, and dietary restrictions, such as lactose intolerance, gluten allergies, etc., also limit the food choices of those who do not have access to larger chain stores that have more selection”(Food Deserts (Food Empowerment Project).
